Medics said Marina was covered in 198 bruises when she arrived in a critical condition, both old and new.

They inferred that Chizhik had been beating her for a while, before the incident on January 29.

A local said: “They [Chizhik and Yekaterina Komar] beat up all five of their children. Several times we tried to step in and told the mother to call the police.

“She insulted us and said that they were her children and she could do to them what she wanted. I regret we did not call the police. It might have saved the youngest child’s life.”
